Speaking at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Huawei Cloud CEO Zhang Ping’an virtually defied US sanctions.
It is now almost certain that artificial intelligence will be one of the fundamental technologies of the future. Naturally, many countries are already aiming to take the lead in this field, with the US and China at the forefront. To gain superiority, the US has imposed various sanctions on China, preventing the delivery of top-tier chips to the country. Huawei addressed this issue, with Huawei Cloud CEO Zhang Ping’an countering concerns that restrictions blocking access to advanced AI processors like NVIDIA’s H100/H200 and B100/B200 will significantly slow down China’s AI development. Ping’an noted that while sanctions limit available computing power, they are not dependent on cutting-edge technologies.
Expectations are high for the Ascend 910 series
Ping’an highlighted Huawei’s efforts to develop the Ascend 910 series processors for AI applications. According to the Huawei executive, these processors will be capable of competing with NVIDIA’s A100. Ping’an mentioned that US restrictions are pushing major Chinese companies such as Baidu, Huawei, and Tencent to rely on domestic technology, creating an opportunity for Huawei.
Ping’an asserted that the belief that US sanctions will hinder China’s leadership in artificial intelligence should be abandoned. He emphasized that despite the sanctions, he is confident that China can maintain its leading position in AI development through innovation and a strategic approach.
