Google’s New Artificial Intelligence Will Bring The Doctor to Your Feet!

Google has introduced its latest artificial intelligence model, MedLM, tailored for healthcare applications, marking a significant advancement in the doctor-patient relationship.

This cutting-edge technology is an extension of Google’s Med-PaLM 2, boasting capabilities that purportedly rival those of expert doctors. The introduction of MedLM signifies a groundbreaking era in the realm of health, as Google continues to push the boundaries of AI innovation in the medical field.

The newly unveiled MedLM tool is now accessible to a limited group of Google Cloud customers through the Vertex AI platform. Notably, healthcare entities such as HCA Healthcare and BenchSci are currently undergoing trials, wherein the tool assists physicians in tasks such as compiling patient notes and conducting medical research.

MedLM comprises two distinct models, namely large and small. The large model is reportedly adept at analyzing patient records and undertaking complex tasks across the entire healthcare system. In contrast, the mid-range model is designed to offer real-time solutions, such as summarizing doctor-patient interactions.

Despite Google asserting a cautious approach, experts express concerns regarding the potential risks associated with deploying artificial intelligence in healthcare without comprehensive testing and safety measures.

The deployment of medical chatbots to a wider audience is viewed as precarious due to apprehensions that AI applications could provide harmful diagnostic advice, disseminate medical misinformation, or unintentionally expose private health records. The World Health Organization has emphasized the risk of errors and the erosion of trust in AI resulting from untested systems.

Aashima Gupta, Head of Health Strategy at Google Cloud, emphasized the significance of creating models of varying dimensions for patient-doctor analysis. Rather than advocating for a one-size-fits-all solution, Gupta believes that diverse approaches have the potential to revolutionize the healthcare sector.
