Google’s Gemini AI and Election Questions: Limited Answers Acknowledged

Google has confirmed reports that its Gemini AI has been providing concise answers to questions about elections.

When asked about election-related topics while interacting with Gemini, Google’s AI-powered chatbot, users received straightforward and succinct responses. Responding to inquiries from TechCrunch, the tech giant acknowledged that it is limiting responses to such questions in all countries experiencing elections globally.

Much of the world goes to the polls

It is anticipated that many elections will take place this year, involving countries such as India, the USA, Indonesia, Turkey, Ukraine, South Africa, and Pakistan. These elections will see a quarter of the world’s population casting their votes. Google’s decision highlights the potential influence that generative AI could have on these processes. Generative AIs could be exploited by malicious actors to manipulate or disseminate false or misleading information.

The feature is currently disabled worldwide, but it is expected to be activated in all countries shortly. When asked about parties or politicians, Gemini responds with, “I’m still learning how to answer that question. In the meantime, you can try Google Search.” This indicates that the AI cannot be tricked by spelling errors or word distortions.

Google had previously announced plans for such restrictions. Last month, Gemini faced criticism for altering historical facts to fit its narrative and for incorporating ethnicity-related prompts into almost every query.
