Google Nano Banana is Coming to Messages: AI Image Editing is Now in Chats

Google’s AI tool, Nano Banana, is coming to the Messages app. Here are all the details about this new feature that will offer the ability to edit images and create fun memes!

Google’s AI-powered image generation tool, Nano Banana, may soon be integrated into the Messages app. Code discovered by Android Police and a hidden banana icon suggest that users will be able to edit and create images directly within chats using Nano Banana (part of Gemini 2.5 Flash).

The Banana Icon is Currently Passive

The banana icon, which appears when you long-press on an image in a message, is not active right now. However, as Google continues to roll out Nano Banana across its applications, the icon is expected to become usable shortly.

Nano Banana‘s Role: Editing is in the Foreground

Nano Banana is currently available in Search via NotebookLM and Google Lens. Plans for Google Photos have already been announced. Its likely arrival in the Messages app signals that Nano Banana will be carried over to other platforms as well.

The location of the passive icon in Messages is noteworthy: it is located in the toolbar of a long-pressed image. This suggests that the focus will be on editing existing images rather than generating new ones. Operations such as filters, image cleanup, or humorous touches can be easily performed via menus or request options with Nano Banana.

For example, you could long-press your blurry food photo, tap the banana icon, and ask for a “mouth-watering food blog style shot,” or you could create a version of your friend’s awkward selfie where a T-Rex photobombed the shot.

It’s Meme Time in Messages

Google wants to spread Nano Banana and its other AI tools to every platform. They have announced that over 5 billion images have been created with Nano Banana so far. The already large user base of Google Messages could quickly make Nano Banana the most widely used AI image tool.

Of course, the competition is also intense. Meta AI encourages image generation on WhatsApp and Messenger; Apple offers custom emoji and image generation for iMessage. Snapchat, on the other hand, has placed AI-based visual tools at the center of its product.

It is not yet clear when Nano Banana will come to Messages, but while you wait, you can try out the new Nano Banana-powered camera tools.
