Google Launches Gemini CLI: Free Open-Source AI for Developers

Google has introduced Gemini CLI, an open-source artificial intelligence tool for developers, making it available via the command line. Gemini CLI works in conjunction with Gemini Code Assist, Google’s AI-powered code writing tool, and shares the same technological infrastructure.

Google announced its open-source AI tool, Gemini CLI. Developed specifically for developers, it enables direct interaction with AI from the command line. Moreover, individual users can access this tool completely free of charge.

Google has unveiled a new open-source tool, Gemini CLI, which allows developers to use its AI, Gemini, through the terminal. This command-line interface lets users give natural language commands to write code, generate content, manipulate files, and perform many other tasks. It ushers in an era of integrated AI in the command line.

Gemini CLI integrates with Gemini Code Assist, Google’s AI-powered code writing tool. This allows users to benefit from the same technology in both the VS Code editor and the terminal. Individual developers can obtain a free license with just a Google account, gaining access to the Gemini 2.5 Pro model and a context window of up to 1 million tokens.

Gemini CLI supports new technologies like the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and system instruction files (GEMINI.md). It also enables users to automate Gemini CLI by integrating it into their own scripts. Developers can contribute to this open-source project via GitHub. Gemini CLI shares the same technological infrastructure as Gemini Code Assist. Users can also get AI support through “agent mode” in VS Code. This feature allows AI to guide users step-by-step through processes like debugging, test writing, and code migrations. This feature of Gemini Code Assist is offered at no additional cost across all plans.

Gemini CLI is reportedly still in its beta phase and offers the industry’s highest free usage quota for individual users.
