OpenAI’s AI-powered video application, Sora, achieved 470,000 downloads on its first day on the Android version, outperforming its iOS launch by four times. The application allows users to create short videos with AI.
The AI-powered video application Sora made a significant debut on the Android platform on its first day. The application, developed by OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, was downloaded approximately 470,000 times within the first 24 hours of its release on the Google Play Store. This data was shared by the app analytics company Appfigures.
Four Times the Success on Android Compared to iOS

This figure is equivalent to approximately four times Sora’s iOS launch. The Android version achieved 327% more installations compared to iOS. However, Appfigures also emphasizes that this difference is not entirely comparable.
The iOS version had a closed structure, only accessible in the US and Canada, and required an invitation to use.
In contrast, the Android version was made available in the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. OpenAI also removed the invitation requirement at the end of October, making the application available to a wider user base.
Popular from Day One
Sora had also garnered significant attention during its iOS phase. The application reached over 1 million downloads within a week of its launch and quickly became one of the most popular free apps on the App Store. It currently remains the fourth most downloaded application on the US App Store.
Users Are Creating Their Own AI Videos
Sora allows users to create short videos with AI by simply writing a prompt.
Thanks to the application’s “Cameos” feature, users can also include themselves or their friends as animated characters in the videos. The generated videos can be viewed by navigating through a TikTok-style vertical feed.
Updated Data and Interest in the US
Appfigures also updated its initial estimates for the iOS launch. The first-day download count, initially estimated at 56,000, was actually approximately 110,000, with 69,300 of these originating from the US.
In contrast, the Android version achieved 296,000 downloads in the US alone, contributing to the total of 470,000 downloads. This indicates that interest in the application remains strong even after the initial launch excitement on iOS subsided.
Rival Meta AI Steps onto the Stage
Sora is now in direct competition with Meta AI. Following its US launch, Meta has made its mobile AI application available to European users as of today.
