Elon Musk Wants to Implant Chips in Brains

The company is preparing to launch a clinical study in the UK and has announced that it will work with University College London Hospitals Trust and Newcastle Hospitals.
Neuralink is seeking volunteers who are paralyzed due to conditions such as motor neuron disease or spinal cord injury to have chips implanted in their brains.
These chips are surgically embedded into people’s heads, allowing the brain to communicate with a computer. According to the company, five severely paralyzed individuals are already using this system to control devices with their thoughts. Neuralink allows people to apply to be considered for clinical trials through a website called “Patient Registry.”

Neuralink was founded in 2016 by Elon Musk and a group of engineers and scientists. Since then, it has developed a brain-computer interface that has been used in some trials.
Initial human trials have focused solely on paralyzed individuals. However, Elon Musk suggests that this chip could be used for more general purposes in the future, enabling direct information transfer between humans and computers.
The company has faced criticism regarding its practices involving monkeys and other animals used in some early experiments.
Neuralink aims to expand its early trials internationally, conducting studies in Canada as well as the UK.
