New clues found in ChatGPT‘s source code indicate that the days of in-chat shopping are not far off, as the system appears to redirect users straight to Shopify’s checkout page.

Direct Shopify Integration Within ChatGPT

Keywords like “buy_now”, price and shipping info, user reviews, and “shopify_checkout_url” found in the source code suggest that OpenAI is actively working on a seamless e-commerce experience. Users will soon be able to complete purchases within the chat window, without being redirected to external websites.

Thanks to this feature, Shopify’s vast seller network will gain the ability to connect directly with ChatGPT users—without the need for additional integration steps. This marks a significant step toward turning ChatGPT into a transaction-capable assistant, rather than just an informational tool.

AI-Powered Shopping Gets Competitive

The shopping functionality has been embedded in the same area of ChatGPT’s response panel where weather updates and market data are displayed, signaling a phased rollout in the near future.

OpenAI had previously experimented with similar capabilities via an agent called Operator, allowing select Pro users to book travel or complete grocery shopping through chat. Now, the company is preparing to expand these capabilities to a broader audience.
