Ahead of the general elections set for October 22, Switzerland has taken a critical stance on the use of artificial intelligence in political campaigns.
Five major political parties – the Swiss Social Democratic Party, the Center Party, the Green Party, the Liberal Green Party, and the Protestant Party – are set to compete in the elections. Together, they have endorsed a charter that sets guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in their campaigns.
According to the charter, the parties are required to openly reveal any use of artificial intelligence in their campaign strategies. Additionally, they are explicitly banned from using AI to launch attacks on their opponents.
While recognizing artificial intelligence as a tool that offers new ways of communicating, the parties also acknowledged the risks associated with it. They raised concerns about the potential for AI to manipulate facts or falsely attribute statements to political figures.
The Radical Liberal Party, opting not to sign the charter, has pledged to prevent the misuse of AI, particularly against technologies like “deepfake” that can produce misleading videos. Nevertheless, they labeled the ban on using AI for negative campaigning as “absurd.”
The Swiss People’s Party has yet to take a clear position on this issue.
Switzerland is preparing for its general elections, which are scheduled for October 22.
