Apple is working on “augmented reality” glasses

Despite past rumors and a reported cancellation, Apple appears to be pressing on with its augmented reality (AR) smart glasses project. However, eager consumers will likely need to wait several years before they can slip on a pair.

While concrete details remain elusive, a recent report suggests Apple hasn’t abandoned its “Apple Glass” ambitions entirely. The technology giant is reportedly still working on the AR glasses, but a release date seems years down the line.

The highly anticipated Apple Glass may face a much longer wait than initially expected. Recent reports suggest the smart glasses are still in early development stages. While aiming for a user-friendly, everyday device, Apple is likely targeting a release date in 2026 or even 2027 at the earliest.

Apple’s foray into mixed reality began with the recently announced Vision Pro. This high-end headset is expected to be followed by a more affordable offering. However, augmented reality glasses, like the rumored Apple Glass, are likely further down the line.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman describes Apple’s smart glasses as “lightweight” and comfortable for all-day wear. Users will supposedly experience AR content seamlessly integrated into their vision.

It’s important to note that several companies already offer smart glasses, including XReal, Rokid, and Meta. XReal and Rokid focus on multimedia experiences with built-in displays for entertainment. Meta’s $300 Ray-Ban Stories glasses, on the other hand, boast the most advanced features yet, including AI assistance, a camera, and a speaker.
