Apple Acquires French AI Company Datakalab
Apple is steadily advancing its artificial intelligence initiatives, including the development of generative AI features for iOS 18. The tech giant has recently acquired the French AI startup Datakalab.
This acquisition was discreetly reported by Challenges magazine, which stated that Datakalab quietly became part of Apple.
While the financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed, experts view this as a significant move. Datakalab, established in 2017 by brothers Xavier and Lucas Fischer, initially focused on facial analysis technology.
This technology was notably utilized during the COVID-19 pandemic to monitor mask usage and to gauge the emotions of cinema audiences.
Apple is interested in algorithm compression technology
Apple’s interest lies particularly in the area of algorithm compression. In 2022, Datakalab shifted its focus towards the compression of artificial intelligence algorithms.
By developing a new method, the company managed to reduce the complexity of calculations, enabling AI operations to be executed faster on devices.
This advancement is crucial for Apple as it plans to incorporate a native language model into iOS 18. The company aims to have AI functionalities run on the device itself, without the need for an internet connection or remote servers.
With the technology from Datakalab, Apple will be able to more easily achieve this objective, providing users with a faster and smoother AI experience.
