Google has recently updated Android Auto to version 11.4, introducing artificial intelligence-powered message summaries for all users. This new feature, previously announced earlier in the year, now allows Google Assistant to read aloud summaries of long messages.

This enhancement aims to provide a more convenient and safer way for drivers to stay informed without needing to divert their attention from the road to read lengthy texts.

Upon updating to version 11.4, users will encounter a notification upon first opening the app, informing them of the new availability of Google’s AI message summaries. While accepting this notification is not mandatory, users will be provided with a shortcut to access settings for managing this feature.

AI message summaries are designed to work with longer messages exceeding 40 words, while Google Assistant will continue to read out shorter messages in their entirety. The first time an AI message digest is initiated, Google notifies users that a summary has been generated, cautioning that the content may slightly differ from the original message in accuracy. During the message reading, a silent notification will display on the phone, indicating the creation of the summary.

In practice, a test message exceeding 100 words was condensed into a summary of approximately 15 words. Although many specifics are omitted in this process, the essence of the message is retained. However, outcomes may vary depending on the context. Following the summary’s reading, Android Auto presents a notification seeking user feedback on the provided summary.

For those preferring not to use AI summaries, disabling the feature is straightforward through the Android Auto settings. While the “AI Message Summaries” option remains available within both the phone and Android Auto’s in-car settings, a new toggle for “Notifications with Assistant” has also been introduced.
