AI-Powered Mini-Humanoid Robots Play Football Match

Humanoid robots went head-to-head in the “RoBoLeague,” the World Robot Football League. Here are some images that will make you laugh out loud!

In Beijing, at the “RoBoLeague,” the World Robot Football League, humanoid robots showcased their skills in three-on-three football matches. In the semi-final match between Tsinghua University’s Vulcan Team and Beijing Information & Science Technology University’s Blaze Light Team, the robots took to the field entirely under artificial intelligence (AI) control, without any human assistance.

Can they kick the ball? Yes. But there’s certainly no danger of footballers losing their jobs, just like many other professions. When it comes to playing football, robots are still quite amateur. Some look like they don’t understand what’s happening, while others stumble around as if they’ve had too much to drink. Here are images from the humanoid robots’ football match:

Still, watching them is quite entertaining. Although they frequently fall, unlike human footballers, they get up immediately without “faking an injury.” Even if some of their movements are, so to speak, unrelated to football, their ability to respond quickly to changes within the game is impressive.

Of course, the competition’s purpose isn’t just entertainment. China aims to showcase developments in robot technology through this league. So far, robots produced in this field have excelled in abilities such as balance, speed, strategic decision-making, and recovering after a fall.

This organization also serves as a rehearsal for the World Humanoid Robot Games, which will be held in Beijing next year. The ultimate global goal is to bring robots to a level where we can use them in workplaces and homes. For now, they’re just kicking the ball, but who knows… Maybe one day they’ll even celebrate a goal.
