A first in Europe from the Swedish startup: The autonomous truck is on the road.

Einride has taken a significant step towards the future of sustainable transportation and autonomous logistics by operating its fully autonomous electric heavy-duty truck on a public road in Europe for the first time.

Swedish-based Einride has launched its Level 4 autonomous driving technology-equipped electric truck, which it has been working on for a long time, on public roads in Europe for the first time. The operation, carried out at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, proves that the technology the company has been quietly developing has now reached a point where it can serve in the real world.

Offers a range of 650 km

The vehicle used in the trial, permitted under Belgium’s new legal framework, stands out with its cab-less design, a maximum gross vehicle weight of approximately 37 tons, and a 320 kWh capacity battery. Thanks to this powerful battery, the truck can achieve a range of over 650 kilometers. Its aerodynamic body structure also contributes to this long range. Einride’s developed system operates with remote operator support in edge cases, much like Waymo’s approach. The vehicle processes over 5 million data points per second, transferring information from radar and LiDAR sensors to artificial intelligence to make real-time driving decisions. This method allows multiple vehicles to be managed by a single operator and holds the potential to significantly reduce costs in the logistics sector.

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is known as one of the world’s most complex logistics hubs. With its test at this site, Einride has demonstrated that autonomous systems can manage cargo flow more efficiently, reduce emissions, and offer much more sustainable solutions compared to diesel trucks.

Einride CTO Henrik Green said, “European ports like Antwerp-Bruges are crucial for the decarbonization of logistics and the security of our supply chains. As the European Commission has recognized autonomous vehicles as key to the EU’s competitiveness, we are proud to provide a clear example of how innovation and regulation can be balanced for safer, more efficient, and sustainable logistics.”
