How Metaverse Enables Reunion with Deceased Relatives
In a recent Metaverse-themed interview with podcaster Lex Fridman, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the company’s latest innovation in humanoid VR avatars. These Codec avatars are created using advanced scanning technology to produce 3D facial models of users.
During their conversation, Fridman shared a heartfelt wish, saying, “I would love to communicate with my departed loved ones.” He then asked Zuckerberg about the future possibilities of making such interactions a reality.
Zuckerberg recognized the complexity of the concept, suggesting that creating a virtual representation of a deceased person through VR and AI might be possible but would involve certain “trade-offs.”
“There may be ways that being able to interact with or relive certain memories could be helpful for someone who is grieving a lost loved one.”
He further mentioned that there’s a potential for such interactions to become “unhealthy” and stated, “I am not an expert on this topic, so I believe we need to explore and understand this issue more thoroughly.”
