South Korea’s New ‘Metaverse’ City: Granting Citizenship in NFT Form

South Korea has declared its plan to recreate the city of Seongnam in the ‘metaverse.’ It was announced that this virtual city would offer citizenships to users in the form of NFTs, with the platform set to be launched in June 2023.

The project aims to rebuild Seongnam, South Korea’s 12th most populated city, entirely in the ‘metaverse.’ The virtual city will grant its residents citizenships as NFTs, allowing NFT holders to access information about the city’s municipal services.

It was highlighted that Seongnam intends to initiate its virtual operations in the ‘metaverse’ around May or June 2023.

Based on the information provided, Seongnam currently has a population of approximately 1 million residents.

This new initiative is expected to attract a significant number of people to purchase NFTs and participate in the ‘metaverse.’ The city administration plans to release more information and details about the NFTs and the ‘metaverse’ project in October.

Seoul, the capital of South Korea, was also building a ‘metaverse’ city

Meanwhile, Seongnam is not the first South Korean city to venture into forming a ‘metaverse’ city. Prior to this, Seoul, the capital of South Korea, had already established its own ‘metaverse’ city and commenced closed testing of the virtual environment.

This test phase is designed to enable participants to engage interactively in games and activities within the virtual recreations of Seoul City Hall and Seoul Plaza.

Seoul also has plans to incorporate digital services into its ‘metaverse’ city. These services include a virtual complaint center equipped with a live chat feature.

The initial testing phase will involve around 3,200 participants from Seoul’s online learning platform and experts from the Seoul IT Tech Governance Group.
