Metaverse Move From The Father of Metaverse!
Neal Stephenson, the author who coined the term “Metaverse” three decades ago, is now venturing into the Metaverse with a blockchain project named LAMINA1.
Notably, he has revisited his Metaverse vision, emphasizing an experience tailored for flat 2D displays, diverging from the virtual reality or augmented reality technologies employed by models proposed by companies like Meta and Microsoft, which utilize headsets and lenses.
This unique approach by Stephenson showcases the evolving nature of Metaverse concepts and the various directions in which creators and innovators are exploring this immersive digital space.
Father of Metaverse
Neal Stephenson, the speculative fiction writer who introduced the concept of a virtual reality world called the Metaverse in his 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash, has teamed up with Peter Vessenes to launch a new layer-1 blockchain named LAMINA1. Stephenson, aged 62, is not only known for his writing but also founded the augmented reality (AR) firm Magic, where he held the position of chief futurist from 2014 to 2020.
The primary goal of LAMINA1, as described by former Bitcoin Foundation president Peter Vessenes on June 8, is to serve as the “base layer for the Open Metaverse.” He further mentioned that the network is anticipated to be “probably” carbon negative.
Vessenes expressed the vision for LAMINA1 as a place that aligns closely with Neal’s concept, prioritizing creators, technical teams, and artistic personalities. The platform aims to offer support, spatial computing technology, and a community that backs those actively contributing to the development of the Metaverse. This collaboration underscores the continued exploration and development of blockchain technology in the context of creating and enhancing the Metaverse experience.

Vessenes emphasized that the project’s focus is on the rapid development of the blockchain, involving efforts to establish necessary governance, technology, node operators, IP partners, artists, and funds.
Neal Stephenson’s 1992 novel envisions the Metaverse as a virtual urban environment accessible through a global fiber optic network and VR headsets. The narrative delves into concepts of virtual real estate, alongside themes of social inequalities, central control, and pervasive advertising.
Stephenson shared insights into his thoughts on the Metaverse, predicting that the majority of it will be designed for displays rather than VR headsets. In his original depiction three decades ago, Stephenson did not anticipate the widespread delivery of high-quality video games to consumers in the future.
This highlights the evolving nature of the Metaverse concept and its dynamic trajectory as technology and digital experiences continue to progress.
