Cybertruck Fails to Meet Expectations: Elon Musk Sells to His Own Companies

Tesla experienced a significant drop in Cybertruck sales in the third quarter of 2025. While Model 3 and Model Y sales rose, the Cybertruck is making headlines due to lack of interest, a lawsuit, and Musk’s sales to his own companies.
After a tough few months, Tesla sales started to rise again, influenced by the end of federal Electric Vehicle (EV) tax incentives. However, while customers are showing strong interest in the Model 3 and Model Y models, Tesla’s newest vehicle, the Cybertruck, is not seeing the expected demand.
Big Drop in Cybertruck Sales

Tesla only managed to sell 5,385 units of the Cybertruck in the third quarter of 2025. This represents a 63% decrease compared to the same period in 2024. Last year, more than 14,000 Cybertrucks were delivered during that quarter.
The company sold slightly more than 16,000 Cybertrucks throughout the entirety of 2025. This figure is far from Elon Musk’s annual sales target of 250,000.
A total of approximately 20,000 Cybertrucks are expected to be delivered by the end of the year, which is less than half of the 50,000 units sold in 2024.
These data were shared by Kelley Blue Book and published by Business Insider. Tesla does not report Cybertruck sales separately in its official reports, instead including them in the “other models” category along with the Model S and Model X.
Overall Increase in Electric Vehicles

While the Tesla Cybertruck lags behind, the overall EV market showed strong performance in the third quarter. A total of 438,487 electric vehicles were sold; this represents an increase of 40.7% compared to the previous quarter and a 29.6% increase compared to the same period last year.
The reason for this surge is attributed to consumers rushing to buy EVs before the $7,500 tax credit expired on September 30th. However, experts anticipate a sharp decline in sales in the fourth quarter with the end of this incentive—which could further exacerbate the Cybertruck’s difficulties.
Competitors are on the Rise
Unlike the Cybertruck, other electric trucks managed to increase their sales:
- Rivian R1T saw a 13% year-over-year growth.
- Ford F-150 Lightning increased its sales by 39.7%.
- GMC Hummer EV increased by 21.9%.
- The Sierra EV stood out with a massive 771% increase.
Fatal Accident and Lawsuit

The Cybertruck’s woes are not limited to sales. In recent months, following an accident that resulted in the death of two teenagers, families filed a lawsuit against Tesla. The petition alleges that faulty door handles prevented the teenagers from exiting the vehicle.
Elon Musk Sells to His Own Companies
Cybertruck sales have been so weak that Elon Musk has started directing the unsold vehicles to his own companies. According to Electrek, Tesla is delivering the unsold Cybertrucks to Musk-owned firms such as SpaceX and xAI.
It is stated that SpaceX plans to use these vehicles to replace its existing fleet of gasoline-powered vehicles.
