Tesla Model Y Standard Introduced: What’s Missing from the Cheaper Model Y?

Tesla has introduced its affordable electric SUV, the Model Y Standard. The new version, which stands out with its $39,990 price tag, makes the Tesla experience more accessible by forgoing many features.
Tesla has officially launched the highly anticipated, more affordable version of the Model Y. The new version, called the Tesla Model Y Standard, has become the brand’s cheapest electric SUV in the North American market.
The starting price of the new Model Y Standard has been announced as $39,990. This means it is $5,000 cheaper than the current Model Y’s entry price of $44,990. However, considering the features that have been removed, one might say this price difference is minimal.
🚗 Simplified Exterior Design

The Model Y Standard features a simpler design at the front. Instead of a full-width LED strip, it uses slimmer headlights, and the Matrix LED technology has been removed. A redesigned bumper accompanies this simplification. On the side, a new 18-inch wheel design stands out, which is said to increase aerodynamic efficiency.
The vehicle is offered in three different body colors. Gray is available at no extra cost, while an additional $1,000 is charged for white and $1,500 for black.
🪑 Significant Interior Limitations
The new Tesla Model Y Standard also comes with some simplifications in the interior. This version does not include a HEPA filter. The upholstery uses a combination of fabric and vegan leather. The mirrors and seats are manually adjustable, and since laminated glass is not used in the front windows, the sound insulation is also weaker.
🔊 Audio System and Equipment Differences
The Model Y Standard features a 7-speaker sound system (with no subwoofer). In higher trims, this number increases to 15 speakers. The center console has two cup holders instead of deep storage compartments. The ambient lighting feature has been removed, a rear passenger screen is not offered, and the front trunk volume is also smaller. The glass roof is still present in this version, but its interior is covered with a fabric material.
To reduce costs, Tesla has simplified not only the hardware but also the software in this version. Some driver-assistance features, including basic Autopilot, are not available on this model. Finally, the FM/AM radio is also among the removed features.
Looking at the technical side, the vehicle continues with a thermal management system that includes a heat pump. With a 69 kWh battery, it aims for a driving range of up to 516 kilometers according to EPA measurements in the US. The model, which completes 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.8 seconds, is targeted to gain around 257 kilometers of range with a 15-minute charge, thanks to its up to 225 kW DC charging support.
