Musk Announces: Popular Grok AI Coming to Tesla Vehicles

The latest update to the Tesla mobile app has started supporting Elon Musk’s Grok artificial intelligence. Tesla vehicle owners will soon be able to use Grok in their cars.
With the Tesla App 4.46.6 update, deeper integration with Elon Musk’s AI initiative, xAI, has been achieved. The new version allows users to connect to xAI’s Grok AI assistant directly through the Tesla app. This means in-app notifications can direct users to Grok-related pages. Furthermore, Elon Musk has officially confirmed Grok’s integration into Tesla vehicles.
In addition to these update details, a statement came from Elon Musk, CEO of both companies. Musk shared on his X account, “Grok is coming to Tesla cars very soon. Next week at the latest.” According to this statement, Grok is expected to be added to Tesla vehicles as part of the 2025.26 software update. While Musk did not provide further details, significant information about Grok integration emerged some time ago.
Grok Has Been Ready for a While

Greentheonly, known for their Tesla software analysis, revealed that the in-car version of Grok is actually already installed on many Tesla models. With the 2025.20 version, it was stated that the system was largely complete, with only a server-side activation pending. However, this feature will only work on vehicles with Ryzen-based infotainment systems. Older generation Intel Atom processor models will initially be excluded. Since Grok gets its processing power from the cloud, not the vehicle, Autopilot hardware is not a requirement for this system.
To use Grok, your Tesla vehicle needs to have a premium connectivity package or Wi-Fi access. Additionally, users will be asked to log in to their xAI Grok account. It’s currently unclear whether the free version of Grok will suffice. Perhaps a subscription, as is normally required, will be necessary to access advanced Grok features.
The Grok user interface has also been revealed for the first time. The system, which operates in dark mode on the car’s screen, includes many features found in the Grok mobile app. Users can choose different voices and character profiles, just like on mobile.
Swearing Can Be Controlled

The system also includes an NSFW mode to enable or disable explicit content, and a Kids Mode to make it more suitable for children.
Regarding how Grok will be used, it’s reported that users can activate Grok by pressing the microphone button on the steering wheel and communicate their requests in a natural dialogue. While a wake word isn’t currently used, there are traces in the code suggesting this feature may be activated in the future. With the new system, you’ll be able to give commands to your car using natural sentences like, “Can the air conditioning be a bit cooler?” This could mean Tesla is completely redefining the driving experience.
Grok will initially launch with English and Chinese support. According to Green, preparations are being made for other languages in the system, but which languages will be supported is not yet certain. The company is thought to still be conducting some server-side tests and is working for Grok to replace the existing voice command system from day one.
