World’s First “Memory Operating System” for AI, MemOS, Announced: Giving AI Human-Like Recall

Scientists from China have announced the world’s first AI memory operating system, “MemOS.” This system aims to provide AI models with human-like memory and reasoning capabilities.

Current AI models, which everyone has started using, still lack desired memory capabilities and often experience forgetfulness. Researchers from leading Chinese universities, Jiao Tong University and Zhejiang University, have made a significant breakthrough in this area. Scientists have introduced “the world’s first memory operating system” for artificial intelligence.

This system is named “MemOS.” MemOS enables AI models to possess human-like memory and learning abilities. It achieves this by treating memory as a fundamental computing resource, similar to CPU and storage.

159% Better in Reasoning, 38% Better in Memory Than OpenAI’s ChatGPT Systems

The researchers also conducted several tests in their study, whose findings were published on arXiv. These tests showed that the MemOS system performed significantly better in reasoning—by a remarkable 159%—compared to the systems used by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. In terms of memory, it demonstrated a 38.98% better performance. It yielded particularly good results in complex scenarios, such as linking information across multiple conversations.

Most current AI models are not very successful with long-term memory because they restart user information from scratch in conversations. Of course, ChatGPT’s memory feature is one of the better examples in this regard. ChatGPT can remember information about you and previous conversations, but even then, we frequently see problems where the bot can forget.

Brings Human-Like Recall to AI

MemOS aims to eliminate this issue by bringing a more human-like recall ability to models and enabling contextual transitions between systems. It will achieve this through modular memory units called “MemCubes,” developed by the researchers. These units have a structure that can store different types of information, allowing it to be transferred and evolved over time.

The researchers have released MemOS as an open-source project on GitHub. In the future, we may see this system integrated into various AI models. Should this happen, much more advanced, human-like AI tools could enter our lives.
