Google Showcases Android XR Glasses That Could Replace Your Phone

At today’s Google I/O event, the company unveiled Android XR glasses designed for everyday use. These new smart glasses are packed with features that could make them extremely practical for daily life.

Google has been working on smart glasses for a long time and had previously entered a partnership with Samsung to develop headsets under the Project Moohan name. Alongside this, the company has also been developing Android XR glasses similar to Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses. During today’s event, Google provided a live demonstration of these glasses and shared new insights about their functionality and partnerships.

Gemini-Powered Android XR Glasses with AI Capabilities

As expected, Google’s Android XR glasses will be AI-focused devices, integrated with its powerful Gemini model. Gemini will act as a virtual assistant, helping users through the smart glasses. The device will feature microphones, cameras, and speakers, and its design will closely resemble that of standard eyeglasses.

For example, if you want to go somewhere, Gemini can provide navigation directions directly through the glasses. You’ll also be able to take photos, view notifications, manage your calendar, and much more.

Live Translation and Visual Memory Features

Two standout features of the glasses are particularly noteworthy. First, Gemini will be able to remember what the glasses have seen, essentially giving the device a kind of visual memory. For instance, if you misplace your keys while wearing the glasses, you can ask Gemini, and it will recall where you left them.

The second feature is live translation. While Google already offers real-time translation in its services, Android XR glasses will take this a step further. If someone is speaking in a foreign language, the glasses will display real-time subtitles, translating their speech directly on-screen. A demo of this feature was shown at the event.

Partnerships with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster

To make the glasses more appealing for daily wear, Google is following a path similar to Meta’s collaboration with Ray-Ban by partnering with established eyewear brands. These partners include Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, both of which are known for stylish and functional designs.

Expanded Partnership with Samsung and Project Moohan Release

Finally, Google confirmed that it will expand its collaboration with Samsung in the XR space. The companies will continue to develop new devices, and Project Moohan is expected to launch by the end of this year.
