Google Removes Controversial AI Ad
Google’s artificial intelligence advertisement titled “Dear Sydney” was taken down following public backlash. As the Olympics commenced, various companies launched their advertisements on screen, including Google’s “Dear Sydney” ad. This advertisement featured Google’s Gemini AI. Due to the negative reactions, Google announced its decision to remove the ad.
In the ad, a father wants to write a letter to Olympic athlete Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. To do so, he uses Google Gemini’s generative artificial intelligence with his father. The letter concludes with the phrase, “With a little help from Gemini.”
After the backlash, the ad was withdrawn
The reactions to the ad were not what Google anticipated. Shelley Palmer, a professor of advanced media at Syracuse University, criticized the ad’s approach, warning that it risked “a monocultural future in which human ideas become irrelevant.” Additionally, the ad was criticized for creating confusion about the role of artificial intelligence in people’s ability to express their feelings.
A Google spokesperson responded to the backlash, stating that they removed the ad in response to the criticism. They explained that the ad aimed to praise the US team and emphasized that artificial intelligence supports human creativity but cannot replace it. The spokesperson also mentioned that the ad did not receive negative feedback in their previous detailed tests.
These reactions may not be solely due to the advertisement itself. As artificial intelligence technologies continue to develop, discussions about creativity, originality, privacy, and security are increasingly prominent.
