48-Year-Old Atari 2600 Crushes ChatGPT in Chess

As technology advances, artificial intelligence (AI) has begun to surpass humans and machines in many fields. However, an intriguing experiment showed that old technology can still pull off surprises. A 48-year-old Atari 2600 achieved an unexpected victory against modern AI models in chess.

Released in 1977, the Atari 2600 has resurfaced years later for a completely different purpose. In a fascinating test, this nostalgic game console was pitted against today’s popular AI models like ChatGPT and Copilot in a chess match. The result was quite astonishing: the Atari 2600 defeated modern AIs in chess.

In experiments conducted by infrastructure architect Robert Caruso, the Atari Video Chess game running on the Atari 2600 showed unexpected success against ChatGPT. ChatGPT, on the other hand, struggled considerably at the beginning of the game to differentiate pieces and follow moves. Unable to recognize the pieces, ChatGPT conceded the match.

According to Caruso, the AI system had to be repeatedly informed about the state of the chessboard. Despite this, ChatGPT lost due to simple move errors, let alone winning the game. It was stated that ChatGPT attributed this defeat to the abstract nature of the Atari’s piece symbols. However, the result did not change even after switching to standard chess notation. ChatGPT admitted its loss after realizing its mistakes in the game.

Interestingly, it was ChatGPT itself that proposed this chess challenge. The overall outcome of this experiment was that the 48-year-old Atari 2600, despite its very limited processing power, prevailed over modern AI models in chess. This test demonstrated that AI may still face difficulties in games played with physical boards or symbolic pieces.
