Meta and Microsoft have collaborated to develop a Quest virtual reality headset inspired by Xbox. The release date for this headset is currently unknown, but it will be packaged with an Xbox controller. As virtual reality (VR) technologies continue to spread rapidly and the number of VR games increases, Sony has introduced a headset called PS VR for the PlayStation.
Until now, there had been no similar move from Xbox. However, Xbox gamers have been able to play games on Meta’s Quest devices through its cloud gaming service. A recent report from Meta revealed that the company is set to launch an Xbox-inspired Quest device soon.
Xbox-inspired Meta Quest will come with controller
This collaboration between Meta and Microsoft should not be mistaken for the launch of an Xbox-specific VR headset. Instead, it’s more accurate to describe it as a limited edition, Xbox-exclusive model, which is essentially a redesigned version of the existing Quest devices. The company has also confirmed that this model will include an Xbox controller in the box, and it is likely that games will continue to be playable through the cloud, as is currently the case.
While details about the device are still sparse, it is known to be a Quest 3 model embellished with Xbox-inspired details. However, it is possible that instead of the Quest 3, a different Quest model might be released in the future. The exact release date for this device has not yet been announced.
Meta’s strategy includes opening up Quest VR devices and the Horizon OS operating system to third-party companies. The company recently announced its Horizon OS system as open source, encouraging developers to create apps for various titles.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has made several attempts over the years to integrate virtual reality into the Xbox ecosystem. In 2012, there were leaks about a planned VR headset for the Xbox One, but this device never materialized. The company also experienced limited success with the Windows Mixed Reality platform, which was discontinued months ago. Following these ventures, Microsoft has increased its collaboration with Meta, integrating its services and games more closely with Quest devices.
