When Funcom dropped <em>Dune: Awakening<\/em> on PC last year, I was right there keeping a close eye on the survival mechanics and the community reaction. Almost immediately after the PlayStation showcase, Xbox stepped up to confirm that the <strong>Xbox Series X\/S<\/strong> version is dropping on the exact same day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Exactly Are You Walking Into?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s be completely transparent here. If you are expecting a linear, story-driven action game where you play as Paul Atreides, you need to adjust your expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is what <em>Dune: Awakening<\/em> actually brings to the table:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Developers:<\/strong> It is crafted by Funcom, the studio famous for <em>Conan Exiles<\/em>. They know how to build harsh, unforgiving worlds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Genre:<\/strong> This is a purebred <strong>Survival MMO<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Gameplay Loop:<\/strong> You start with nothing. If you check the PC version right now, you will see a &#8220;Mixed&#8221; rating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As someone who dissects these trends daily, this doesn&#8217;t surprise me at all. Survival MMOs are an incredibly polarizing genre. The game isn&#8217;t designed to hold your hand; it is designed to punish you until you learn how to master the environment. While mainstream gamers might have bounced off its steep learning curve, the hardcore survival community has genuinely embraced it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I actually think the console release is exactly what this game needs. MMOs thrive on population density, and opening the gates to the PS5 and Xbox player base is going to inject a massive amount of life into the servers. Personally, I am incredibly curious to see how Funcom has adapted the complex MMO UI and inventory management for console gamepads.
