They compared scans taken before they launched with scans taken immediately after they returned to Earth. Instead of looking at the brain as a whole, they divided it into <strong>100 different regions<\/strong> to track specific movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here is what they found:<\/strong> The brain doesn&#8217;t just swell; it physically <strong>migrates<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Upward Shift:<\/strong> The brain pushes up against the top of the skull.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Backward Shift:<\/strong> It slides toward the rear of the skull.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Squeeze:<\/strong> This movement compresses the veins and cerebrospinal fluid pathways at the top of the head.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 2 Millimeter Warning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be thinking, <em>&#8220;Ugu, how much can a brain really move?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study found shifts of roughly <strong>2 millimeters<\/strong>. In the context of driving a car, 2mm is nothing. But inside the tight, bony enclosure of your skull? <strong>2 millimeters is massive.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of your skull as a perfectly packed suitcase. If you suddenly shove the contents 2mm in one direction, something is going to get squished. The research showed that the areas most affected were those responsible for <strong>motor control and sensory input<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This might explain why astronauts often feel clumsy or disoriented when they first return to gravity.
