Sei<\/strong>‘s blockchain<\/strong> team announced its partnership<\/strong> with Xiaomi<\/strong>. As part of the collaboration<\/strong>, Xiaomi<\/strong>\u2019s new smartphones<\/strong> sold outside China<\/strong> and the US<\/strong> will feature a pre-installed cryptocurrency<\/a><\/em> wallet<\/strong> and cryptocurrency search application<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To Be Installed on All Xiaomi Phones Sold Outside China and the US<\/strong> As part of a new global partnership<\/strong> focused on bringing blockchain technology<\/a><\/em><\/strong> to more people starting from 2026<\/strong>, Xiaomi<\/strong> will pre-install<\/strong> the crypto app<\/strong> developed by Sei Labs<\/strong> on its new phones. The application is connected to Sei<\/strong>, a Layer 1 blockchain<\/strong> designed specifically for digital asset trading<\/strong>, and will come pre-installed<\/strong> on all new Xiaomi<\/strong> phones sold outside China<\/strong> and the US<\/strong>. This amounts to a vast number of devices<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sei app<\/strong> serves as a crypto wallet<\/strong> and a gateway to Web3<\/a><\/em> services<\/strong>. According to Sei<\/strong>, users will be able to perform peer-to-peer<\/strong> transfers, interact with decentralized applications<\/strong>, and explore other blockchain-based products<\/strong> without downloading anything extra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sei<\/strong> also plans to expand this partnership<\/strong> beyond smartphones<\/strong>. The company states that it intends to enable stablecoin payments<\/strong> in over 20,000 Xiaomi stores<\/strong>, starting with Hong Kong<\/strong> and certain European Union<\/strong> countries. This will allow consumers<\/strong> to purchase Xiaomi products<\/strong> using stablecoins<\/strong> like USDC<\/strong>, with transactions<\/strong> being completed on the Sei blockchain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, for most users<\/strong>, Sei<\/strong> will likely become one of the applications on the bloatware<\/strong> list. Pre-installed apps<\/strong> have long been a pain point for Xiaomi<\/a><\/em> phones<\/strong>. For the past few years, phones have been arriving loaded with apps that most people never want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xiaomi<\/strong> has tried to be more transparent<\/strong> since then and has made some improvements, but this partnership<\/strong> seems like a step backward. Installing crypto apps<\/strong> by default, which most users<\/strong> are unaware of or will not use, does not seem like the right decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xiaomi<\/strong> is currently the world’s third-largest smartphone brand<\/strong> after Apple<\/strong> and Samsung<\/strong>. The company covers more than 13%<\/strong> of the global market share<\/strong>. Numerically, this translates to over 100 million devices<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
