The project aims for a domestic and <strong>sustainable lithium supply<\/strong> by <strong>2028<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australian company Vulcan Energy has announced that a critical stage has been reached in its <strong>geothermal-based lithium project<\/strong> in Germany\u2019s <strong>Upper Rhine Valley<\/strong>. The company has finalized <strong>\u20ac2.2 billion in financing<\/strong> for the <strong>Lionheart project<\/strong>, which relies on obtaining lithium from hot, highly mineralized <strong>brine<\/strong> extracted from <strong>geothermal reservoirs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to this funding, the installation of full <strong>commercial facilities<\/strong>, following pilot-scale studies, will begin in the coming days. Under the project, hot brine drawn from deep <strong>geothermal reservoirs<\/strong> is used simultaneously for <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/future-energy-technologies\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"198\">energy<\/a><\/em> generation<\/strong> and <strong>lithium extraction<\/strong>. Once the fluid is extracted underground, <strong>lithium ions<\/strong> are separated via a chemical process and converted into <strong>lithium hydroxide<\/strong> used in <strong>battery production<\/strong>. This method offers a <strong>low-carbon production model<\/strong> of strategic importance to Europe, characterized by zero <strong>fossil fuel consumption<\/strong> and minimal waste generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project also includes a <strong>geothermal power plant<\/strong> that will provide <strong>renewable electricity<\/strong> and heat to the region. Thus, the extracted fluid transforms into both a resource for mineral processing and an energy source for local communities. As is known, the <strong>EU<\/strong> and many other regions are dependent on <strong>China<\/strong> for <strong>critical raw materials<\/strong>. Therefore, such projects are even more valuable than usual. Europe is closely monitoring this project as <strong>geothermal-based lithium<\/strong> is viewed as one of the cleanest methods of domestic production. This target is maintained with the new financing. The company states that this amount will be sufficient for the production of approximately <strong>500,000 electric vehicle batteries<\/strong> per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buyers for the <strong>lithium<\/strong> to be produced in the first phase of the project have already been confirmed.
