The first tests will take place at <strong>roadside facilities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Japan<\/strong> is accelerating its efforts to integrate <strong>road infrastructure<\/strong> into <strong>renewable energy production<\/strong>. The country&#8217;s <strong>Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT)<\/strong> announced that it has launched a new call for <strong>solar panel technologies<\/strong> integrated into the <strong>road surface<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the application process, the goal is to test these systems in environments close to <strong>real usage conditions<\/strong>. The Ministry stated that in previous trials, <strong>cracks<\/strong> were detected on surfaces due to the <strong>heavy load<\/strong> created by vehicle passage, and therefore, new <strong>field tests<\/strong> will be conducted only in <strong>light-load areas<\/strong> open to <strong>pedestrian use<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"479\" src=\"https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Highways-in-Japan-Are-Becoming-Part-of-the-Renewable-Energy-Plan.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35657\" srcset=\"https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Highways-in-Japan-Are-Becoming-Part-of-the-Renewable-Energy-Plan.webp 720w, https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Highways-in-Japan-Are-Becoming-Part-of-the-Renewable-Energy-Plan-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Highways-in-Japan-Are-Becoming-Part-of-the-Renewable-Energy-Plan-150x100.webp 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Energy Will Also Be Produced on Roads<\/strong> Under the new program, the <strong>performance<\/strong>, <strong>durability<\/strong>, and <strong>production efficiency<\/strong> of <strong>PV panels<\/strong> will be measured through projects implemented specifically at <strong>roadside facilities<\/strong>. <strong>Social usage scenarios<\/strong> will also be simulated using the <strong>electricity<\/strong> produced in these areas. Thus, how <strong>lighting<\/strong>, <strong>small-scale charging units<\/strong>, and other <strong>local energy needs<\/strong> can be met will be evaluated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Solar energy applications<\/strong> integrated into the <strong>road surface<\/strong> and <strong>roadside<\/strong> are gaining strength in <strong>Japan<\/strong>. During the week, <strong>AirWater<\/strong> and <strong>Luxor Solar<\/strong>, the Japanese branch of Germany-based <strong>Luxor Solar GmbH<\/strong>, announced that they installed <strong>vertical PV systems<\/strong> in some <strong>parking lots<\/strong> in the country and commissioned them under <strong>power purchase agreements (PPA)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This trend is not limited to Japan; similar projects are spreading rapidly in <strong>Europe<\/strong> as well. <strong>Luxembourg<\/strong> enacted new regulations permitting <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/spiderweb-designed-floating-solar-energy-system-developed\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"31348\">solar energy<\/a><\/em><\/strong> along <strong>highway sides<\/strong> in November. <strong>Poland<\/strong> began testing <strong>PV arrays<\/strong> next to <strong>major highways<\/strong> mid-year. Efforts to integrate solar energy into <strong>transportation infrastructure<\/strong> in different regions of the world are drawing attention. In August, <strong>Ko-Solar<\/strong> and Germany-based <strong>R. Kohlhauer<\/strong> announced plans to construct <strong>PV-integrated noise barriers<\/strong> along <strong>highway corridors<\/strong> in the <strong>USA<\/strong>.
