The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC)<\/strong> has warned the rapidly growing humanoid robot sector<\/strong> about overheating<\/strong>. Although investment<\/strong> in the sector is increasing fast, robots have not yet achieved widespread use<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though China aims to be the future leader in humanoid robots<\/strong>, the country’s top economic planning agency<\/strong> expressed that caution is needed. Speaking in Beijing<\/strong>, National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC)<\/strong> spokesperson Li Chao<\/strong> emphasized that the sector needs to grow in a healthy<\/strong> way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Li stated that the rapid progress<\/strong> in humanoid robot technologies must be carefully balanced with the risk of overheating<\/strong>. Despite a significant amount of investment<\/strong> flowing into the field, proven use cases<\/strong> for these robots in factories<\/strong> or homes<\/strong> are still limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Li noted that there are more than 150 companies<\/strong> working on humanoid robotics<\/a><\/em><\/strong> in China. Stating that more than half of these are entirely new startups<\/strong> or firms shifting from other areas, he warned that this density could lead to copycat projects<\/strong> and a stagnation of progress: “Frontier technologies<\/strong> have always faced the problem of balancing rapid growth<\/strong> with bubble risk<\/strong>. The picture we see today in the humanoid robot sector<\/strong> is an example of this.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This statement is noteworthy because the Chinese administration had previously defined “embodied intelligence<\/strong>” technology behind humanoid robots as one of its strategic priorities<\/strong>. This field is included in the category identified by the Communist Party<\/strong> as one of the six critical sectors that will carry the country’s growth until 2030<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The humanoid robot sector<\/strong> has grown rapidly in the last two years. Many humanoid robot prototypes<\/strong> capable of walking, grasping objects, and performing basic tasks have been introduced at major tech fairs<\/strong> in China. Many companies have started showing off their robots for areas like warehouse logistics<\/strong>, simple production line<\/strong> jobs, and customer service<\/strong>. While investors<\/strong> and analysts<\/strong> see these as signs that the sector is starting to mature, many applications are still at the pilot level<\/strong> and have not moved to mass adoption<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investments<\/strong> are also increasing rapidly. Citigroup<\/strong> expects exponential growth<\/strong> in robot production next year as Chinese manufacturers increase capacity. Major companies are also reporting receiving their first orders. UBTech<\/strong>, as one of the prominent players in the sector, announced that it received orders exceeding one billion yuan<\/strong>. The market also reflects this interest. The Solactive China Humanoid Robotics Index<\/strong>, which tracks companies in the field, rose by approximately 26 percent<\/strong> this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Li says steps will be taken to prevent a market overflowing with similar products and to open space for innovation<\/strong>. Officials plan to improve entry and exit rules<\/strong>, create a more competitive ecosystem<\/strong>, and support basic research<\/strong> areas. In summary, China wants the robotics sector<\/strong> to grow, but aims for this to happen without jeopardizing stability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
