Tesla<\/strong> has announced that its largest charging station to date is now fully operational. Built in California<\/strong>, the facility features 164 charging points<\/strong> powered by solar panels<\/strong> and batteries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Powered by Solar and Megapacks<\/strong> Tesla announced that all Supercharger units<\/strong> at its largest charging station are now in service. Located in the Lost Hills<\/strong> region of California<\/strong>, this massive facility is powered by 11 MW solar canopies<\/strong> that provide shade for the parking spaces. Energy generated by the panels is transferred to 10 Megapack batteries<\/strong> with a total storage capacity<\/strong> of 39 MWh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

164 Charging Points Available<\/strong> To put it in perspective, a typical fast-charging point<\/strong> usually has between four and twenty charging units. Tesla has distinguished itself with larger installations in this regard. Previously, the 120-unit Supercharger station<\/a><\/em><\/strong> in Barstow, California<\/strong> was the company’s largest. The new facility contains 164 charging units<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This new facility by Tesla could set a new standard<\/strong> for fully sustainable electric vehicle charging<\/strong>. It also demonstrates Tesla\u2019s vertical integration<\/strong> approach. The company not only manufactures electric vehicles<\/a><\/em><\/strong> but also develops charging stations<\/strong> and the energy systems<\/strong> that power them. As other automakers turn toward public charging networks<\/strong>, home energy systems<\/strong>, and stationary battery solutions<\/strong>, such unified solutions are expected to become more common in the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Installed Much Faster Due to Low Grid Reliance<\/strong> According to Tesla\u2019s Director of Charging Max De Zegher<\/strong>, the combination of solar panels<\/strong> and batteries<\/strong> allowed the company to install this giant facility much faster than a traditional grid connection<\/strong> would allow. In the US, it can take utility companies months or even years to complete necessary infrastructure upgrades<\/strong> and activate a new fast-charging station<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first 84 units<\/strong> of the station opened in early July, just 8 months after construction began. The completion of the entire site took approximately one year. Solar energy<\/a><\/em><\/strong> and battery storage<\/strong> play a critical role here. While renewable sources<\/strong> are clean, they are not constant. Batteries compensate for this by storing energy for use when the sun is not shining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De Zegher notes that the station is not technically completely off-grid<\/strong>. There is a small grid connection<\/strong> at the station intended for future capacity increases<\/strong>. However, in practice, the station operates almost entirely on solar energy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
