NASA<\/a><\/em><\/strong> decided to reduce the planned number of missions to four to fully certify the system<\/strong> and align with the ISS’s operational needs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NASA<\/strong>, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration, ended months of speculation regarding the next flight of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft<\/strong>. In the official statement, it was confirmed that the vehicle will only carry cargo<\/strong> to the International Space Station<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NASA and Boeing<\/strong> set the earliest target date for the uncrewed Starliner-1 mission<\/strong> as April 2026<\/strong>. NASA added that rigorous testing<\/strong>, certification<\/strong>, and mission readiness activities must be completed by this date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NASA Commercial Crew Program Manager Steve Stich<\/strong> stated, “NASA and Boeing continue to rigorously test the Starliner propulsion system<\/strong> in preparation for potential two flights next year.” This decision followed challenges faced by Boeing<\/strong> during the development process and issues with the spacecraft’s propulsion system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NASA<\/strong> announced it reached an agreement to modify the Commercial Crew contract<\/strong> signed with Boeing<\/strong> in 2014, which envisioned six crewed flights following certification. According to the new plan, Starliner-1<\/strong> will primarily carry cargo<\/strong>, followed by a maximum of three additional missions until the ISS<\/strong> is retired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stich stated that this change would allow NASA and Boeing<\/strong> to focus on safely certifying the system in 2026, performing Starliner’s first crew rotation<\/strong> when ready, and planning future missions based on the station’s operational needs until 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2014, both SpaceX<\/a><\/em><\/strong> and Boeing<\/strong> signed contracts to develop crewed spacecraft<\/strong>. While SpaceX performed a successful crewed test flight in mid-2020 and its first operational mission later that year with the Crew Dragon vehicle<\/strong>, Boeing<\/strong> faced difficulties during development. Consequently, Dragon<\/strong> became a reliable transport system<\/strong> for NASA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starliner’s<\/strong> first uncrewed flight<\/strong> in December 2019 was interrupted by software issues<\/strong>, and the vehicle was nearly lost. Its second mission, Orbital Flight Test 2<\/strong> (May 2022), was more successful and reached the ISS<\/strong> despite some thruster problems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the subsequent first crewed flight<\/strong> carrying astronauts Butch Wilmore<\/strong> and Suni Williams<\/strong>, Starliner again experienced serious thruster issues<\/strong> while approaching the ISS. The danger of this flight became clear nearly a year later. Starliner<\/strong> managed to dock, but after heated discussions, NASA<\/strong> decided the vehicle should return to Earth<\/strong> uncrewed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, to bring the crew back safely, a Dragon mission<\/strong> carrying only two astronauts launched in late 2024, and Wilmore and Williams<\/strong> returned safely to Earth in March 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the incident, the expectation that Boeing<\/strong> needed to conduct an uncrewed flight<\/strong> to prove the safety of its propulsion system<\/strong> was officially confirmed. Since the cause of the thruster issues<\/strong> typically occurs in the “service module<\/strong>” jettisoned during atmospheric entry, making diagnosis difficult, Boeing remains largely silent about changes to the propulsion system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
