In a blog post published recently, the <strong>Wikimedia Foundation<\/strong>, which manages the online encyclopedia, called on <strong>AI developers<\/strong> to use its content \u201cresponsibly.\u201d The Foundation requested that developers use the contributions with proper <strong>attribution<\/strong> and access the content through its paid product, the <strong>Wikimedia Enterprise<\/strong> platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This optional, paid platform allows companies to utilize <strong>Wikipedia<\/strong> content on a <strong>large scale<\/strong> while simultaneously preventing the overloading of <strong>Wikipedia servers<\/strong>. After updating its bot detection systems, it determined that an unusual surge in traffic in May and June was caused by <strong>AI bots<\/strong> attempting to evade detection. Conversely, human-driven page views were reported to have dropped by <strong>8%<\/strong> compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong> is now setting some <strong>guidelines<\/strong> for <strong>AI developers<\/strong>. The Foundation emphasizes that <strong>generative AI systems<\/strong> must <strong>credit<\/strong> the contributing authors and editors when leveraging its content. It warns that the decline in visits to <strong>Wikipedia<\/strong> could lead to a decrease in the number of <strong>volunteers<\/strong> who develop the content and the individual <strong>donors<\/strong> who support their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this year, the Foundation announced its <strong>AI strategy<\/strong> for editors.
