Meta<\/strong> continues to pour money into the metaverse<\/strong>, which is shaped around virtual reality<\/strong> and augmented reality<\/strong> technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company announced its third-quarter earnings<\/strong> and reported that its Reality Labs<\/strong> division recorded $470 million in sales revenue<\/strong> during this period, while posting an operating loss of $4.4 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wall Street<\/strong> had expected Reality Labs to report an operating loss of $5.1 billion on $316 million in revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Reality Labs<\/strong> unit is responsible for developing the company’s family of Quest-branded virtual reality headsets<\/strong> and the Ray-Ban<\/strong> and Oakley AI smart glasses<\/strong>, developed in partnership with eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company’s Reality Labs<\/strong> division has recorded total losses of over $70 billion<\/strong> since the end of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief Financial Officer Susan Li<\/strong> said Meta expects Reality Labs revenue<\/strong> in the fourth quarter<\/strong> to be lower than the same period last year. Li noted this is partly because the company is not introducing a new virtual reality headset<\/strong> in 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CEO Mark Zuckerberg<\/strong> introduced the $799 Meta Ray-Ban Display<\/strong> glasses in September. These are the company’s first consumer-ready AI glasses<\/strong> featuring a built-in display<\/strong> and a neural-technology wristband<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EssilorLuxottica<\/strong> reported in its earnings call this month that the AI glasses<\/strong> boosted sales in the third quarter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
