SpaceX<\/strong> is expected to receive a $2 billion contract<\/strong> as part of US President Donald Trump’s<\/strong> defense project named “Golden Dome<\/strong>.” According to sources, the project will involve up to 600 satellites<\/strong> to establish an “air moving target indicator<\/strong>” system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Wall Street Journal<\/strong>, this will be a new defense initiative<\/strong> in addition to the other satellite projects<\/strong> the Elon Musk<\/strong>-led company is pursuing with the Pentagon<\/strong>. SpaceX<\/strong> is currently working on a military communication network<\/strong> called “Milnet<\/strong>,” which relies on classified “Starshield” satellites<\/strong> and terminals for the Pentagon<\/strong>. While neither the Pentagon<\/strong> nor SpaceX<\/strong> has commented on the matter, no official announcement has been made yet. However, the necessary funding for this project has already been approved under the “One Big Beautiful Bill<\/strong>” signed by Trump<\/strong> in July 2025<\/strong>. Only the identity of the defense contractor<\/strong> to be awarded the contract has not yet been disclosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Golden Dome<\/strong> is designed as an advanced missile defense shield<\/strong> composed of satellites<\/strong>, interceptor systems<\/strong>, command and control systems<\/strong>, and other supporting infrastructure. Therefore, the $2 billion share<\/strong> SpaceX<\/strong> is set to receive constitutes only a small portion of this massive Department of Defense<\/strong> project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, SpaceX<\/strong> is not expected to be the sole contractor on the project; many defense companies<\/strong> and technology startups<\/strong> will also contribute. Inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Trump’s missile defense project<\/strong> will be similar in structure, though on a much larger scale<\/strong>, to Israel’s highly successful “Iron Dome<\/strong>” system. The Iron Dome<\/strong> is known to intercept threats like rockets and mortars with an estimated 90% success rate<\/strong>. The roots of the Golden Dome<\/strong>, however, stretch back to the “Strategic Defense Initiative<\/strong>” (SDI<\/strong>) unveiled by President Ronald Reagan<\/strong> in the 1980s. SDI<\/strong> aimed to provide protection against ballistic missile attacks<\/strong> from the Soviet Union using space-based lasers and advanced defense systems. At the time, the necessary technology was not sufficiently developed, making the project unfeasible, and it was shelved with the end of the Cold War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the emergence of new threats<\/strong> like hypersonic missiles<\/strong> is causing existing defense systems to become inadequate. For this reason, Golden Dome<\/strong> aims to be more than just a new missile defense system; it seeks to be an integrated defense network<\/strong> extending from land to sea, space, and even cyberspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
