In the long-delayed Artemis 3<\/strong> mission, things are changing due to pressure from China<\/strong>. NASA<\/strong> is reopening the bid due to SpaceX’s<\/strong> slow progress, giving Bezos’s Blue Origin<\/strong> a chance to compete. As you might expect, Musk<\/strong> is not pleased with this development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prime contractor for Artemis 3<\/strong>, the first crewed mission to return humanity to the Lunar surface<\/strong> after nearly half a century, may change. In April 2021, NASA<\/strong> signed a massive $2.9 billion<\/strong> contract with Elon Musk\u2019s<\/strong> company, SpaceX<\/strong>, to provide the first human lander for the Artemis program<\/strong>. Under this agreement, a modified upper stage of SpaceX\u2019s Starship megarocket<\/strong> was to land astronauts on the Moon<\/strong>. However, NASA<\/strong> is reopening the bid, citing dissatisfaction with SpaceX’s development pace<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sean Duffy<\/strong>, NASA\u2019s interim administrator, stated yesterday, \u201cI love SpaceX<\/strong>; they are a great company. The problem is they are behind. They have stretched their timelines, and we are in a race with China<\/strong>.\u201d Duffy emphasized that the Artemis 3<\/strong> mission is now targeting 2028<\/strong>, and they want to reach the Moon<\/strong> during this presidential term. For this reason, Duffy announced that he would “open the contract<\/strong>” and allow other space companies, such as Jeff Bezos\u2019s Blue Origin<\/strong>, to compete with SpaceX<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blue Origin<\/strong> had previously won a separate Artemis Human Landing System<\/strong> contract worth $3.4 billion<\/strong> in 2023 and planned to land on the Lunar surface<\/strong> during the Artemis 5<\/strong> mission with its Blue Moon lander<\/strong>. NASA<\/a><\/em>‘s<\/strong> move is expected to bring Blue Origin<\/strong> into the competition for Artemis 3<\/strong> as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tension Between SpaceX and Blue Origin<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

NASA\u2019s<\/strong> decision has sparked a new war of words between Elon Musk<\/a><\/em><\/strong> and Jeff Bezos<\/strong>. Musk<\/strong>, through social media, expressed doubts that Blue Origin<\/strong> has ever launched cargo to the Moon<\/strong> or even carried enough payload<\/strong> into orbit<\/strong>. However, Blue Origin’s<\/strong> gigantic New Glenn rocket<\/strong> carried a prototype of its Blue Ring spacecraft<\/strong> into orbit during its inaugural launch in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The planned launch date for the Artemis 3<\/strong> mission has been continuously delayed over the past few years. Initially set for late 2024, the launch was successively postponed to 2025, September 2026, and mid-2027 due to issues with Starship’s testing phases<\/strong>, spacesuits<\/strong>, and NASA’s Orion capsule<\/strong>, among other technologies. Administrator Duffy’s latest statement indicates the target is now 2028<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, the Artemis program<\/strong> has successfully completed the Artemis 1<\/strong> mission, which sent the uncrewed Orion capsule<\/strong> into Lunar orbit<\/strong> in late 2022. NASA<\/strong> is continuing preparations for the Artemis 2<\/strong> mission, which will take four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the Moon<\/strong> as early as next February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, SpaceX\u2019s Starship<\/strong> has conducted 11 sub-orbital test flights to date, and the last two launches are known to be completely successful. However, the core of NASA\u2019s concern<\/strong> is that China<\/strong> is also making significant progress toward its goal of landing astronauts on the Moon by 2030<\/strong>, and the US<\/strong> risks falling behind in this space race<\/strong>. Artemis 3<\/strong> will be the first mission where a human sets foot on the Lunar surface<\/strong> since the Apollo 17<\/strong> mission in 1972.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
