Google\u2019s artificial intelligence<\/strong> unit DeepMind<\/strong> is collaborating with Commonwealth Fusion Systems<\/strong> to control nuclear fusion reactors<\/strong> with AI<\/strong> and maximize energy efficiency<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google\u2019s artificial intelligence<\/strong> research unit, DeepMind<\/strong>, is preparing to entrust the control of fusion reactors<\/strong> to artificial intelligence<\/strong> through a collaboration with the nuclear fusion<\/strong> startup Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS)<\/strong>. The system developed under the partnership will simulate the behavior of the plasma<\/strong> inside the reactor and determine the most efficient ways for energy production<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This work, which has the potential to revolutionize the energy sector<\/strong>, will be implemented in a fusion reactor<\/strong> called Sparc<\/strong>, which CFS<\/strong> is developing. DeepMind<\/strong> will use a special software called Torax<\/strong> to simulate the plasma<\/strong> inside the reactor. This software will then be combined with reinforcement learning<\/strong> and evolutionary search models<\/strong> to identify the most efficient parameters for the reactor to achieve net energy production<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal of fusion reactors<\/strong> is to mimic the process in stars here on Earth<\/strong>. Unlike fission<\/strong>, fusion<\/strong> produces energy output<\/strong> by combining light atoms. Google<\/a><\/em><\/strong> and other technology giants<\/strong> are turning to fusion initiatives<\/strong> to power their energy-intensive data centers<\/strong>. On the other hand, this is not Google\u2019s<\/strong> first step in the field of nuclear fusion<\/strong>. The company previously worked with another fusion<\/strong> startup, TAE Technologies<\/strong>, conducting AI<\/strong>-based analyses to understand plasma<\/strong> behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biggest challenge in fusion technology<\/strong> is keeping the plasma<\/strong> at a high temperature for a long enough time, as in the stars. On the Sun<\/strong>, the massive mass and gravity that provide this balance are replaced by strong magnetic fields<\/strong> in reactors on Earth<\/strong>. However, since these magnetic fields<\/strong> are not perfect, the plasma<\/strong> constantly tends to disperse and lose its energy<\/strong>. Therefore, reactors need control software that can instantly react to the ever-changing conditions of the plasma<\/strong>. This is where artificial intelligence<\/strong> comes in. In CFS’s reactors<\/strong>, there are too many variables for human operators to manage manually. DeepMind\u2019s algorithms<\/strong>, however, can solve these complex equations instantly and ensure the reactor runs stably. Experts state that artificial intelligence<\/strong> plays a key role in the rapid advancements in fusion research<\/strong> in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CFS<\/strong> has completed 66% of the Sparc reactor<\/strong> it is building near Boston<\/strong>. The company believes the reactor, planned for completion at the end of 2026<\/strong>, will be the first in history to demonstrate the success of net energy production<\/strong>, exceeding its own energy consumption<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google<\/strong>, along with DeepMind’s Torax<\/strong> system, is also exploring the direct AI<\/strong>-supported control of the fusion reactor<\/strong>. The company, along with Nvidia<\/strong>, participated in CFS’s<\/strong> $863 million Series B2 investment round in August. Additionally, Google<\/strong> has agreed to purchase 200 megawatts<\/strong> of electricity from CFS’s<\/strong> first commercial power plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
