Audi<\/strong> is challenging the electric BMW 3 Series<\/strong> and Mercedes C-Class<\/strong> with the A4 E-Tron<\/strong>, set to go on sale in 2028. The new A4 will feature the SSP platform<\/strong>, Rivian software<\/strong>, and a range of around 800 km<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audi is preparing to launch the next-generation A4 E-Tron<\/strong> model, featuring an all-new platform, advanced software infrastructure, and a striking design inspired by the Concept C<\/strong>. With this model, the brand aims to introduce a powerful rival to the electric versions of the BMW 3 Series<\/strong> and Mercedes-Benz C-Class<\/strong>. The new A4 is expected to be one of the first series-production models developed according to Audi’s new design philosophy, dubbed “Radical Next.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audi CEO Gernot D\u00f6llner<\/strong> confirmed the development process of the electric A4 to Autocar<\/em>, stating that the vehicle’s launch will be part of the “biggest transformation in the company’s history.” Audi plans to rebuild its product range, design language, and corporate structure from the ground up to become a fully software-centric electric vehicle<\/a><\/em> manufacturer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lately, the brand has withdrawn its controversial model naming strategy, discontinued unprofitable models, and parted ways with thousands of employees to reduce costs. All these moves are in preparation for declining sales and rising expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Platform: SSP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The new A4 E-Tron<\/strong> will be built on the SSP (Scalable Systems Platform)<\/strong> developed by the Volkswagen Group. Starting from 2028, this platform will form the basis for new models from the group’s brands, including the Volkswagen Golf, Skoda Octavia, and Cupra Tindaya SUV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means the A4 E-Tron<\/strong> will be technically largely different from the current A6 E-Tron<\/strong>. The A6 E-Tron uses the PPE platform<\/strong>, which was jointly developed by Audi and Porsche. The SSP, on the other hand, is expected to offer more advanced technology, a longer range<\/strong>, and higher efficiency<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Era of Rivian-Powered Software<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The new SSP platform<\/strong> will be a revolutionary step not only in terms of hardware but also in its software architecture<\/strong>. Audi will use this platform as the foundation for the new software architecture being developed in partnership with Rivian<\/strong>. This system, developed through the Volkswagen Group’s partnership with Rivian, will first appear in the Volkswagen ID.1 model, set to launch in 2027. However, Audi will be the first brand to fully integrate Rivian’s software<\/strong>. D\u00f6llner noted that “Audi is the brand with the highest requirements in terms of functionality.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to this new system, the goals are to simplify production processes, shorten development time, and continuously evolve the vehicles with over-the-air (OTA) update support<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Balance Between Digital and Analog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While developing new software-defined vehicles<\/strong>, Audi is also bringing physical control elements back to the forefront. This approach is clearly evident in their new demonstrator vehicle, the Concept C<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u00f6llner stated, “Our customers want direct access<\/strong>. Therefore, we are using fewer virtual buttons and more tactile control elements<\/strong>. Elements like the feel of real metal, that classic ‘Audi click,’ allow us to create an emotional connection within the interior.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
