The Swiss regulator Gespa<\/strong> is investigating whether the “Right-to-Buy” NFT tokens<\/strong> sold by FIFA<\/strong> ahead of the 2026 World Cup<\/strong> comply with the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swiss regulators are investigating whether the “right-to-buy<\/strong>” tokens sold by the global football organization FIFA<\/strong> ahead of the 2026 World Cup<\/strong> comply with regulations governing gambling<\/strong>. So far, no allegations of wrongdoing have been made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gespa<\/strong> is assessing whether these Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs)<\/strong>, which can be bought, sold, and traded on FIFA<\/strong>\u2019s unique token marketplace, resemble gambling<\/strong> or represent conditional purchasing rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authority has not made any allegations of wrongdoing nor received any reports of violations. Director Manuel Richard<\/strong> told Bloomberg on Monday, “Gespa<\/strong> is gathering information to determine if any action is needed.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the FIFA<\/strong> website, RTB tokens<\/strong> are NFTs<\/strong> that reserve an exclusive purchase window for a specific match. They are not tickets<\/strong>, but they allow holders to buy tickets at face value if the conditions are met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FIFA<\/strong> first launched the “Right-to-Buy” (RTB) tokens<\/strong> for the 2024 World Cup Final<\/strong>, announcing 1,000 RTB<\/strong> opportunities for fans. Team-linked RTBs<\/strong> are only activated if the chosen team qualifies, and they can be sold on the secondary market via the native marketplace powered by FIFA<\/strong>‘s Web3<\/strong> partner, Modex<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the 2026 World Cup<\/strong>, which will be hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico, the “Right to Final<\/strong>” tokens range from $299 to $999<\/strong> depending on the team. Many tokens have already sold out, with prices being set based on probability. Tokens for surprise teams are cheaper, while favorites like Argentina<\/strong>, Brazil<\/strong>, and England<\/strong> are selling at a higher price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FIFA<\/strong> stated that the RTBs<\/strong> were created to address the excessive demand<\/strong> for tickets at certain matches and tournaments. For example, according to FIFA<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, only 3.4 million tickets<\/strong> were available for approximately 23 million requests<\/strong> at the 2022 Qatar World Cup<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world governing body of football first started experimenting with Web3<\/strong> and NFTs<\/strong> in 2022<\/strong>, announcing plans to launch its own native platform, FIFA Collect<\/strong>, on the Algorand blockchain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December 2023, ahead of the Club World Cup<\/strong> in Saudi Arabia, FIFA<\/strong> and Modex<\/strong> released one thousand NFTs<\/strong>. One hundred of these offered a chance to win tickets to the 2026 World Cup finals<\/strong>, while the remaining 900<\/strong> consisted of additional collectibles minted on Polygon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FIFA<\/strong> also stepped into the Web3 gaming<\/strong> space in 2024<\/strong>, developing FIFA Rivals<\/strong> with Web3 game studio Mythical Games<\/strong>. The free mobile game, launched in June 2025, allows players to manage clubs, compete, and trade NFT player cards<\/strong> on the Mythos blockchain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May, FIFA<\/strong> decided to move away from Algorand<\/strong> and migrate its NFT marketplace<\/strong> and collectibles to Avalanche<\/strong>, which will support its own Layer-1 blockchain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Francesco Abbate<\/strong>, CEO of Modex<\/strong> and FIFA Collect<\/strong>, said that AvaCloud<\/strong>\u2019s EVM-compatible<\/strong> structure makes it easy to connect FIFA Collect<\/strong> with mainstream wallets and DApps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With an estimated global fan base of over 5 billion<\/strong>, Avalanche Subnets<\/strong> will allow FIFA<\/strong> to run an adjustable, private chain independent of the main Avalanche<\/strong> network to manage event-driven surges, such as those caused by the World Cup<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
