This will allow <strong>scrap steel<\/strong> to be melted and recycled without emitting <strong>carbon emissions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Swiss company <strong>Panatere<\/strong> launched the world&#8217;s first two <strong>solar-powered steel melting and recycling furnaces<\/strong> on October 3rd in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the historic heart of the watchmaking industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These <strong>pilot-scale systems<\/strong> are designed to reprocess <strong>stainless steel waste<\/strong> generated by local <strong>watch manufacturers<\/strong> and <strong>medical device producers<\/strong>. Both sectors are known for their high-precision engineering applications and intensive use of steel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the System Works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/indir-10.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/indir-10.webp 720w, https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/indir-10-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/indir-10-150x113.webp 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This innovative method can melt <strong>stainless steel<\/strong> by reaching temperatures of up to <strong>1,450\u00b0C<\/strong> using energy derived solely from <strong>sunlight<\/strong>, without using any <strong>fossil fuels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the larger-scale prototype, a <strong>138 m\u00b2 heliostat<\/strong> consisting of 40 movable mirrors tracks the sun and directs the light toward a <strong>10-meter-diameter concave concentrator<\/strong>. The smaller system features a <strong>30 m\u00b2 heliostat<\/strong> and a compact <strong>12 m\u00b2 concentrator<\/strong> made up of approximately 460 mirrors. The concentrated light is transferred to a <strong>crucible<\/strong> inside the <strong>solar reactor<\/strong>, where the metal scraps are melted and reformed into ingots. Both furnaces use a two-stage process that captures sunlight and intensifies its concentration by thousands of times at the focal point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lo\u00efc Bonsack<\/strong>, Project Manager for Innovation and Industrialization at <strong>Panatere<\/strong>, stated that the company will focus on the smaller but more efficient second design moving forward. He added that this system will concentrate sunlight <strong>5,500 times<\/strong>, reaching temperatures of up to <strong>2,000\u00b0C<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Les fours solaires de La Chaux-de-Fonds\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UkMyxACNtCM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The company will continue to test and develop the technology in collaboration with local firms over the next few years. They plan to open a <strong>full-scale factory<\/strong> by <strong>2028<\/strong>, either at the current site or in the Wallis mountains of Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the facility is operational, it will be possible to produce <strong>1,000 tons of recycled steel<\/strong> per year using only <strong>solar energy<\/strong>.
