Jeff Bezos, the founder and executive chairman of Amazon, forecasts that gigawatt-scale data centers<\/strong> will be built in space within the next 10 to 20 years<\/strong>. Bezos stated that these centers will eventually be more efficient<\/strong> than data centers on Earth, mainly due to the uninterrupted and abundant solar energy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Data centers face growing demand with the increased use of artificial intelligence<\/strong> and cloud computing<\/strong>. Operating these centers requires significant consumption of electricity<\/strong> and large amounts of water to cool the servers. During a conversation with John Elkann, Chairman of Ferrari and Stellantis, at the Italian Tech Week event, Bezos said, \u201cIt’s hard to predict exactly when, but in a little over 10 years, and probably not more than 20 years<\/strong>, we will start building these giant gigawatt data centers<\/strong> in space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea of space-based data centers<\/strong> is gaining increasing interest among major tech companies. Bezos emphasized that these centers will have an advantage over their Earth counterparts because solar energy<\/strong> can be obtained 24 hours a day<\/strong> in space, and clouds, rain, or weather conditions will not affect their efficiency. According to Bezos, the costs of data centers in space will be lower<\/strong> than those on Earth within a few decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bezos expressed that this transition is part of a broader trend toward improving life on Earth<\/strong> by using space. He stated, \u201cThis has already happened with weather satellites. It has happened with communication satellites. The next step will be data centers<\/strong>, followed by other types of manufacturing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, moving data centers into space also presents some serious challenges. Server maintenance is difficult and expensive, upgrade possibilities are limited, and the costs of rocket launches<\/strong> are very high. Furthermore, risks like failed rocket launches can affect operational security. Additionally, the inherent challenges of space itself must be dealt with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
