Meta<\/strong> is reportedly planning to acquire RISC-V<\/strong>-based chip startup Rivos<\/strong>. This move would be part of a strategy to reduce its reliance on Nvidia<\/strong> and accelerate the development of its own AI accelerators<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It appears that Meta<\/strong> is planning to acquire the RISC-V<\/strong>-based chip startup Rivos<\/strong>. Although the deal has not been publicly announced, sources cited by Bloomberg<\/strong> have reportedly confirmed the acquisition plan. This move is seen as part of Meta<\/a><\/em>\u2019s<\/strong> strategy to lessen its dependence on Nvidia<\/a><\/em> GPUs<\/strong> and strengthen its internal chip development teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rivos<\/strong> operates as a stealth chip startup focused on designing GPUs<\/strong> and AI accelerators<\/strong> based on the RISC-V<\/strong> open standard. The company’s IP portfolio<\/strong> includes SoCs (System-on-Chips)<\/strong> and PCIe accelerators<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meta<\/strong> has long been working on its own custom AI accelerators<\/strong>. Under the project named Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA)<\/strong>, RISC-V<\/strong>-based chips co-designed with Broadcom<\/strong> were manufactured at TSMC<\/strong> factories. The MTIA AI chip<\/strong> was rolled out in March for limited-scale use in Meta\u2019s data centers<\/strong>, alongside Nvidia GPUs<\/strong> and other AI accelerators<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, the details of the potential deal with Rivos<\/strong> remain unclear. The company had recently claimed a valuation of $2 billion<\/strong> in a funding round. It is also noted that Rivos<\/strong> may not want to be fully absorbed into Meta\u2019s<\/strong> internal teams. Furthermore, it is not definitively known whether the deal will be completed. If Meta<\/strong> succeeds in acquiring Rivos<\/strong>, it will mark a significant step toward developing a globally notable RISC-V chip<\/strong>. Currently, the RISC-V standard<\/strong> is not widely used in US data centers<\/strong>. In China, however, RISC-V<\/strong> is finding its place in personal computers in addition to servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
