Van Straten<\/strong> said that options<\/strong> and other derivative products<\/strong> are attracting institutional investors<\/strong> and mitigating the high price volatility<\/strong>, which is the most prominent characteristic of digital assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pointed to the open interest<\/strong> in BTC futures<\/strong> on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME)<\/strong>, the world’s largest derivatives market, as evidence of a shift. Van Straten<\/strong> wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“CME options open interest<\/strong> is at an all-time high<\/strong>, partially driven by systematic strategies of selling price volatility, such as cash-secured put options<\/strong>. This indicates a more mature market structure<\/strong> with deeper derivatives liquidity<\/strong> around Bitcoin<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Van Straten<\/strong> added that falling price volatility<\/strong> works two ways, meaning the sharp drops often seen in crypto markets<\/strong> will decrease, as will the meteoric rises investors are accustomed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Market analysts continue to debate the impact of financial derivatives<\/strong> and investment vehicles<\/strong> on the Bitcoin market cycle<\/strong> and the broader crypto market<\/strong>. “Too many people are saying, ‘Now that the institutions are here, the cyclical nature of Bitcoin is over.’ I’m not so sure,” said Rocca<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matthew Kratter<\/strong>, a Bitcoin advocate<\/strong> and market analyst<\/strong>, argued that human psychology<\/strong> is the real force driving markets, and that institutional investors<\/strong> are just as irrational as individual participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kratter<\/strong> added: “The last Bitcoin bear market<\/strong> from 2021 to 2022 was largely caused by institutional investors doing really stupid things at places like Grayscale<\/strong>, Genesis<\/strong>, Three Arrows Capital<\/strong>, and FTX<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
