With <strong>VIPER<\/strong>, <strong>NASA<\/strong> will search for <strong>water ice<\/strong> and resources at the <strong>Moon&#8217;s south pole<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>VIPER<\/strong> (<strong>Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover<\/strong>) project, which was canceled last year due to <strong>rising costs and delays<\/strong>, may now reach the Moon thanks to a new collaboration with <strong>Blue Origin<\/strong>. <strong>NASA<\/strong> is preparing to revive the <strong>VIPER<\/strong> rover, planned for a lunar mission, in <strong>2027<\/strong>. <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/tag\/nasa\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"170\">NASA<\/a><\/em><\/strong> will undertake this initiative as part of its <strong>Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS)<\/strong> program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>VIPER is Reborn<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/indir-1-19.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28907\" style=\"width:750px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/indir-1-19.webp 720w, https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/indir-1-19-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/metaverseplanet.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/indir-1-19-150x113.webp 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To deliver <strong>VIPER<\/strong> to the Moon, <strong>Blue Origin<\/strong> must plan how the landing will be executed and successfully demonstrate it. If <strong>NASA<\/strong> approves this plan, <strong>VIPER<\/strong> will be transported by the company&#8217;s <strong>Blue Moon Mark 1 lander<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, <strong>Blue Origin<\/strong> has not yet attempted a lunar landing, but the first test of the company&#8217;s <strong>Mark 1 lander<\/strong> is scheduled for later this year as part of another <strong>CLPS<\/strong> mission. This test will also help <strong>NASA<\/strong> decide on the use of the second <strong>Mark 1 lander<\/strong> planned for <strong>VIPER<\/strong>. <strong>NASA<\/strong> states that the production of the lander to be used for <strong>VIPER<\/strong> is already underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>VIPER<\/strong> program is of critical importance for the broader planned missions to the Moon. Indeed, <strong>VIPER<\/strong> will begin its mission in an environment with extreme conditions at the <strong>Moon&#8217;s south pole<\/strong>, where it will search for <strong>water ice<\/strong> and other resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VIPER<\/strong> was originally scheduled to launch at the end of 2023 but was postponed to 2024 and finally to 2025 due to delays. The program&#8217;s cancellation was announced in <strong>July 2024<\/strong>.
