Thanks to its transparent display and wristband control, it offers functions like messaging, navigation, music, and live translation directly through the glasses.

Meta has unveiled its long-awaited first augmented reality glasses featuring a screen. Announced under the name Ray-Ban Display, the new model will be available for purchase later this month. Although a limited launch is planned initially, Meta will bring the new glasses to more countries and users starting early next year.

This is What Smart Glasses Should Be

The Ray-Ban Display combines a classic glasses design with a transparent head-up display (HUD). Located on the right lens, this screen allows users to reply to messages, see AI-powered directions, make video calls, view photos, and get navigation. Since the glasses pair with your phone, they essentially function as an extension of your phone’s display.

For interactions, a special EMG wristband called the Meta Neural Band is used. This wristband allows users to perform actions like typing or navigating menus with finger movements. The band uses a technology called electromyography to read signals from your muscles, enabling you to control the screen with gestures. The great thing is that you can hold your hand in any position to control it or type. In other words, you don’t need to raise and extend your hand as you do with the Apple Vision Pro.

Although the glasses didn’t run every feature flawlessly during the live demo, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg successfully played music on Spotify, took and viewed a photo, and demonstrated the real-time captions feature. The live translation and caption support, in particular, stood out as the most compelling features for daily use. The device has a directional microphone array, so even if multiple people are talking around you, it transcribes the speech of the person you are looking at. This could make the device immensely beneficial for individuals who are hearing impaired.

While design is a matter of personal preference for an accessory, it’s fair to say that the Ray-Ban Display shows what smart glasses should offer and how they should be designed.

Meta Ray-Ban Display Technical Specifications

On the technical side, the glasses come with a high-resolution, full-color display. Offering 42 pixels per degree of the field of view, it nearly doubles the 20 pixels offered by the Quest 3S. The screen, which provides a 600×600 pixel resolution, can reach a brightness of up to 5,000 nits. Despite this high brightness, light leakage is only 2%, meaning it’s very difficult for those around you to notice there’s a screen in your glasses.

The glasses’ battery life is 6 hours with mixed use and up to 30 hours in total with the case. The weight is 69 grams. The wristband stands out with 18 hours of use and an IPX7 water resistance rating.

The camera on the glasses has a 12 MP resolution and offers 3x zoom. It is also possible to record videos in 1080p resolution at 30 fps.

The product will be offered in black and sand color options, as well as two different sizes: standard and large.
