SpaceX<\/strong> is acquiring EchoStar\u2019s spectrum licenses<\/strong> in a deal valued at approximately $17 billion<\/strong>. The agreement aims to alleviate regulatory pressure from the FCC<\/strong> and will provide Boost Mobile<\/strong> subscribers with access to Starlink<\/a><\/em><\/strong> services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The satellite and telecommunications company EchoStar<\/strong> has agreed to sell its spectrum licenses<\/strong> to SpaceX<\/a><\/em><\/strong> for its Starlink<\/strong> satellite network for around $17 billion<\/strong>. The deal is intended to resolve regulatory scrutiny the company faced during its 5G<\/strong> service expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the news, EchoStar<\/strong> shares surged by nearly 22 percent in pre-market trading. This development is seen as a significant step toward addressing the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC)<\/strong> concerns that EchoStar<\/strong> was underutilizing its spectrum resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump had intervened<\/strong> Previously, the FCC<\/strong> had questioned whether the company was meeting its 5G<\/strong> obligations and raised the possibility of revoking the licenses. U.S. President Donald Trump<\/a><\/em><\/strong> had also pressured the parties to find an amicable solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this agreement, SpaceX<\/strong> will use EchoStar’s licenses<\/strong> to expand Starlink’s<\/strong> service area, particularly making its mobile and “direct-to-cell”<\/strong> satellite internet more widespread. The two companies also signed a commercial collaboration agreement. Accordingly, EchoStar’s Boost Mobile<\/strong> subscribers will gain access to Starlink’s direct-to-cell<\/strong> satellite service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last August, EchoStar<\/strong> completed a license sale to AT&T<\/strong> for approximately $23 billion. The company anticipates that with the completion of the SpaceX<\/strong> deal, all of the FCC’s<\/strong> concerns will be addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the agreement, SpaceX<\/strong> will pay $8.5 billion in cash<\/strong> and provide an equal amount in stock. Additionally, the company will assume EchoStar’s<\/strong> interest payments of approximately $2 billion<\/strong> through the end of 2027.<\/a><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
