In the first seven months of 2025<\/strong>, more than 1 million electric cars<\/strong> were registered in the EU<\/strong>. While the market share rose to 15.6%<\/strong>, the ACEA<\/strong> argued that current CO2 targets<\/strong> are no longer realistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA)<\/strong>, 1,011,903<\/strong> new electric cars<\/strong> were registered in the European Union<\/strong> in the first seven months of 2025<\/strong>. This number corresponds to 15.6%<\/strong> of the total market. The ACEA<\/strong> emphasized that although the proportion of electric vehicles<\/strong> is increasing, it is still far from the targeted level, while some manufacturers have already achieved a higher share of electric vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Electric cars<\/strong>, which also achieved a 15.6%<\/strong> share specifically in July<\/strong>, showed a significant increase compared to the same period last year. In the seven-month period of 2024<\/strong>, this rate was 12.5%<\/strong>, and in July, it was only 12.1%<\/strong>. At that time, electric cars<\/strong> were slightly behind diesel. This year, however, the share of diesel cars has fallen to 9.5%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hybrid cars<\/strong> also stood out in the shared statistics. With a 34.7%<\/strong> share, hybrids<\/strong> became the most preferred vehicle type for EU<\/strong> consumers. Since last summer, hybrids<\/strong> have surpassed pure gasoline vehicles. The total market share of gasoline and diesel vehicles fell from 47.9%<\/strong> in the same period of 2024<\/strong> to 37.7%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growth in electric cars<\/strong> was seen in three of the four largest EU<\/strong> markets. Germany<\/strong> recorded an increase of 38.4%<\/strong> for the year, Belgium<\/strong> 17.6%<\/strong>, and the Netherlands<\/strong> 6.5%<\/strong>. Although France<\/strong> saw a 14.8%<\/strong> rise in July, there was a 4.3%<\/strong> decline for the year overall. Sales of plug-in hybrid cars<\/strong> are also on the rise. In the January-July period, 561,190<\/strong> units were registered. With growth of 94.5%<\/strong> in Spain<\/strong>, 59.2%<\/strong> in Germany<\/strong>, and 60.3%<\/strong> in Italy<\/strong>, the share of these vehicles rose to 8.6%<\/strong>. In 2024<\/strong>, this rate was 6.9%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the total number of electric vehicles<\/strong> is important for climate targets, the distribution by manufacturer is more critical from an economic perspective. The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT)<\/strong> has released updated statistics analyzing manufacturers’ CO2 pools<\/strong>. According to this, BMW<\/strong> (including the BMW and Mini brands) is the leader with a 26% electric vehicle share<\/strong> and is the only manufacturer to have already met the average CO2 targets<\/strong> set for 2025-2027<\/strong>. BMW<\/strong> is followed by the Mercedes-Volvo-Polestar<\/strong> pool with 22%<\/strong>, while Kia<\/strong> and Hyundai<\/strong> are ranked with 19%<\/strong>, and Volkswagen<\/strong> with 18%<\/strong>. Those below the European average were SAIC<\/strong> (14%<\/strong>), the Tesla-Stellantis-Toyota<\/strong> pool (12%<\/strong>), Renault<\/strong> (12%<\/strong>), and Nissan<\/strong> (6%<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the real determinant is not the share of electric vehicles<\/strong>, but the combined CO2 emissions<\/strong> of all engine types. Currently, only BMW<\/strong> is meeting its own target, while Mercedes-Volvo-Polestar<\/strong> and Kia<\/strong> are slightly above the target. Volkswagen<\/strong> still has room for improvement. Nissan<\/strong>, on the other hand, must reduce its CO2<\/strong> by more than 30 grams per kilometer, making it the manufacturer furthest from its target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
