Chinese energy company LONGi<\/strong> will produce 400,000 tons of green methanol<\/strong> from 600,000 tons of agricultural waste<\/strong> annually through a new project. The facility will prevent 1.2 million tons of carbon emissions<\/strong> per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chinese energy giant LONGi Green Energy<\/a><\/em><\/strong> has launched a massive project aimed at producing green methanol using agricultural waste. The facility, which will be realized with a $325 million investment<\/strong>, will process 600,000 tons of agricultural waste<\/strong> annually to produce 400,000 tons of green methanol<\/strong> upon completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the first phase<\/strong> of the project, 190,000 tons of agricultural waste<\/strong> will be converted into methanol through gasification and catalytic synthesis<\/strong> methods. In the second phase<\/strong>, the capacity will be expanded to provide an additional 210,000 tons<\/strong> of production per year. The hydrogen<\/strong> required for this process will be produced by 100 of LONGi’s 5 MW electrolyzers<\/strong>, powered by electricity generated from an 850-megawatt wind farm<\/strong> and a 200-megawatt solar plant<\/strong> in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the facility operates at full capacity, it will prevent 1.2 million tons of carbon emissions<\/strong> annually and create approximately 2 billion yuan ($275 million)<\/strong> in economic value. It is also expected to provide direct and indirect employment for one thousand people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Methanol can be used as a fuel and is also a critical raw material in the chemical industry. However, when produced from fossil fuels, it leads to high carbon emissions. Green methanol<\/strong>, produced from renewable hydrogen<\/strong> and biomass<\/strong> or captured carbon dioxide, is becoming a critical player in industry and maritime transport<\/strong>. As one of the world’s largest manufacturers of solar panels and electrolyzers, LONGi<\/strong> has been taking strategic steps in line with China’s carbon neutrality goals<\/strong> by focusing on green hydrogen and alternative fuels in recent years. The company had previously launched two other green methanol projects. Shipping giants like Maersk<\/strong> are also purchasing methanol from LONGi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
