Norway<\/strong> plans to build floating nuclear power plants<\/strong> equipped with small modular reactors<\/strong>. These units, with a capacity of 200\u2013250 MW<\/strong>, will provide emission-free energy<\/strong> to industry and offshore platforms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two firms in Norway’s<\/strong> energy and nuclear technology sectors have joined forces to develop floating nuclear power plants<\/strong> equipped with Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)<\/strong>. The goal is to provide carbon emission-free<\/strong>, reliable, and uninterrupted energy<\/strong> to industry and offshore platforms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nuclear project developer Norsk Kjernekraft<\/strong> and Ocean-Power AS<\/strong>, a company aiming to operate in offshore power generation, will develop next-generation energy solutions under a signed memorandum of understanding. The plan involves placing small modular reactors<\/strong> on non-propelled, barge-like floating platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will Serve Both Offshore and Onshore<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The floating nuclear power plants<\/strong> to be designed under this project can be deployed both offshore and near the coast<\/strong>. This will enable the supply of emission-free energy<\/strong> to various locations, from remote industrial centers to offshore oil and gas platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ocean-Power’s current concept envisions generating electricity with combined-cycle systems<\/strong> that use both gas and steam turbines on each floating unit, with a capacity of 200\u2013250 megawatts<\/strong>. In the offshore version, these units will supply energy to nearby platforms, while the near-shore versions will feed power into the electrical grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ocean-Power also plans to store carbon dioxide from the power plants using methods such as injecting it into geological formations, transporting it via pipeline, or liquefying it for shipment by vessel. According to Ocean-Power’s website, electricity production is planned to begin by 2029<\/strong>. In the initial phase, suitable technologies, concepts, and business models for the project will be evaluated within the framework of Norwegian legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
